Mauro M. Bacolo

Mauro M. Bacolo, 69, passed into eternal life on December 10, 2016.  Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Mauro retired to the Jersey Shore with his wife, Victoria, while their son, Adrian, remained in Brooklyn. Mauro’s life was spent in service to his country, community and family. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17, performing two tours of duty in Vietnam before being honorably discharged.  Later, he served as Commander at VFW Post 5195 in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Following the events of 9/11, Mauro re-enlisted in the military with the New York State Guard, serving 12 years in the 88th Brigade.  He completed his service with the rank of Sgt. First Class. Mauro graduated from the School of Professional Horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden. He spent 30 years with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, overseeing horticulture operations throughout Brooklyn. Mauro brought his gardening expertise to Ocean Grove, where his home garden stood out amongst the town’s best. True to character, he spent his time helping the Ocean Grove Chamber of Commerce, Citizens Patrol, Historical Society and Beautification Project. Mauro was a beloved man, patriot, veteran, husband, father, friend and neighbor who asked for very little but gave so much to others. He was known to tell his son, “You don’t have to be a physicist to know what matters”. Visitation will be held from 12-1 p.m. and Memorial Service from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, December 17 at Trinity Church, 503 Asbury Ave. in Asbury Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (www.fallenheroesfund.org).

Carol Sedita (nee Pistacchio), 57, of Bethlehem, PA passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016. A former resident of Stirling, NJ, Carol devoted her life to caring for children and pursuing her incredible talent for baking.  She was predeceased by her parents John Michael and Josephine Pistacchio.  Surviving are her beloved children Nicole Carol Sedita and Frank Sedita III, her cherished companion, Eugene Lecko, her sisters Catherine Sidor and Joyce Sipler and her brother John Michael Pistacchio.  A mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday December 9 at 11:00 AM at St. Vincent DePaul Roman Catholic Church, 250 Bebout Avenue, Stirling.  Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. Family and friends will be received at the church prior to the Mass on Friday (10:00-10:45 am). Carolyn O. Carpenter

 

Carolyn Osborne Carpenter, 84, of Ocean Grove passed away surrounded by her four children Wednesday, November 30 at home. She had worked as a Pathology Transcriptionist for Jersey Shore Medical Center before retiring. Carolyn was a talented artist and her portrait of Ronald Reagan is on display and permanently archived at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. Carolyn served proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War. She was a member of the Jersey Shore Artist Guild and she sang with the St. Paul’s Church Choir and the Ocean Grove Auditorium Choir. Carolyn’s great grandfather, John Arnold Osborne donated the corner stone for the Ocean Grove Auditorium. Surviving are her sons Sean Osborne-Lomax and his wife Tracy of Manahawkin, Keith Carpenter of Ocean Grove, Steven Carpenter and his wife Pat of Ocean Township, her daughter Brenda Poland and her husband Steven of Brick. Also five grandchildren, Andrew, Kevin and Daniel Poland and Evan and Tyler Osborne-Lomax. Marilyn E. Benfer

Marilyn E. Benfer, 87, of Ocean Grove, died Tuesday November 22, 2016 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune NJ. Mrs. Benfer was a wife, mother and homemaker. She was a generous soul who loved her family and whose passion was decorating and crocheting. Born and raised in Hillside, NJ, she lived in Hazlet before moving to Ocean Grove in 2003. She was predeceased by her husband William Benfer in 1988 and by her son William Paul Benfer in 2002. Surviving are three children; Robin Benfer of Englishtown, Paul Benfer and his wife Theresa of Hazlet, and Karen A. Livingston of Englishtown. Marilyn had 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; Benjamin, Bethany and Joseph Benfer; Jacqueline Salvatore and her husband Christopher Nackos along with their children Lillian, Nathaniel, Jacob and Alex; Jennifer Coburn; Jeffrey, Daniel and Kevin Benfer; and Elaine, JoAnna and Brandon Livingston. Relatives and friends can pay their respects on Friday November 25th from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. Her funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday November 26th at 10:00 AM with interment following at Marlboro Memorial Cemetery, Marlboro NJ.


Robert J. Jenkins

 

Robert J. Jenkins, 76, of Ocean Grove, passed away on November 11, after an illness. Bob worked as a marketer and was an avid roller-skater.   Born lived in Worcester, MA he had lived in New Jersey for over 50 years. Surviving are his two children, Toni Marie Jenkins Levesque and Robert J. Jenkins, Jr., two sisters, Bertha Jenkins Ostromecki of Worcester, MA and Marion F. Jenkins Talabac of Jupiter, FL, his brother James B. Jenkins of Lakewood, 4 grandchildren Christopher, Charles, Nicholas and Jamie, 4 great grandchildren, Antonio, Eric, Maria and Ruthie,  his longtime friend and companion Louise Mohlenhoff and many nieces and nephews.  Services will be held at the Glendola Bible Church, 1615 Glendola Road, Wall Township on Wednesday December 7, 2016 at 6:00 PM. 


Ann Pisani

 

Ann Pisani, 88, of Ocean Grove died Tuesday November 1, 2016 at Manor by the Sea, Ocean Grove.  Mrs. Pisani worked as a secretary for Singer – Kearfott in Woodland Park before retiring in 1990.  She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove.  Born in Paterson, she lived there until moving to Ocean Grove 24 years ago.  She was predeceased by her husband Fred Pisani in 1974.  Surviving are her son Steven and his wife Kim of Ocean Grove, her daughter Linda Breen and her husband Thomas of Shark River Hills and her grandson Bobby Breen.  Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday at the funeral home at 11:00 AM. 


Catherine Seger

 

Catherine “Kay” S. Seger passed away on October 24 in Palm Harbor, Florida.  Kay was born on September 5, 1923 in Bradley Beach, New Jersey to James and Jean Smith and graduated from Asbury Park High School.  Kay resided in Bradley Beach until her marriage to Oscar Franklyn Seger in 1940 at which time they moved to Sea Girt, New Jersey where she raised their four children.  Kay taught Sunday School at St. Uriel’s Episcopal Church in Sea Girt. Kay was predeceased by her parents, her brothers and sister, her husband Frank and her many dogs. Kay is survived by her children Oscar Franklyn Seger, Jr. (Judy) of Palm Harbor, FL,  Arthur A, Seger (Barbara) of Palm Coast, FL, Dian S. Young of Edgewater, MD and Kathryn Blake of Fort Smith, AR, her grandchildren Arthur Young of Richmond VA, Amanda K. Gregory of Wall NJ, Douglas Seger of FL and Katherine Seger of Cutoff, LA and her great grandson Tyler Franklyn Gregory and her nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Thursday October 27 at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls at 12:30 PM.   In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Monmouth County SPCA would be appreciated. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements. 

 


Mary E. Wallwork

 

Mary E. Wallwork of 1 Surf Avenue, Ocean Grove passed away peacefully at King Manor Nursing Home, Neptune, on Sunday, October 23, 2016, following a brief illness. Born September 16, 1932, Mary was the daughter of Ernest Wallwork Sr. and Irene Baldwin Wallwork, of Glen Ridge and Ocean Grove. Mary was an enthusiastic participant innumerous area organizations in and around Ocean Grove, including St Paul’s Church, the Salvation Army and the Neptune Township’s Senior Center. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, and eating in restaurants with her friends. Mary spent every summer of her 84 years in Ocean Grove, as did her parents, with whom she lived until their deaths. Mary was a year-round resident of Ocean Grove for the past 40 years. Mary leaves behind her brother, Dr. Ernest Wallwork, of Washington DC, a nephew, Adam Wallwork, of South Orange, NJ, and a niece, Dr. Rachel Wallwork of Boston, MA. Mary was developmentally disabled. The family is grateful to all those in Ocean Grove and vicinity who helped Mary during the seventeen years she was living independently in her own home after her mother’s death. Friends may call on Wednesday from 100 -2:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A short funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM


Helen J. Vermeulen

 

Helen J. Vermeulen (known as “Gigi” to her closest friends and family) passed away peacefully in her home on October 19, 2016 surrounded by her loving family.  Helen was born in 1929 to Stanley and Wanda Povey at Norwegian Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She spent her childhood years in Brooklyn, NY where she was baptized at St. Jerome’s Roman Catholic Church, and graduated from Midwood High School. In 1965, she was married to Edward J. Vermeulen, originally of Paterson, NJ, with whom she had three children Stephen (1966), Brenda (1967) and Richard (1969). From 1965 until 1979, Helen and her family resided in Palisades Park, NJ.  In 1979, the family relocated to Ocean Grove, NJ, where Helen and Ed opened, and for many years ran, a successful kitchen cabinet business “Kitchens by Vermeulen.” After Ed’s passing in 2000, Helen moved to North Carolina where she lived with her daughter (and loving care-taker) Brenda until her passing.  She is preceded in death by her father Stanley; her mother Wanda; her husband Edward and brother Bobby. Helen leaves behind several family members including her son, Stephen of Brick, NJ and his wife Denise, grandsons Caleb and Rondell, and granddaughters Amira and Khadija; daughter Brenda Lagnese of Angier, NC, and her husband Michael, granddaughter Amy and grandsons Mickey and Ben; son Richard of Manasquan, NJ, his and wife Colleen and granddaughter Helena, along with several nieces and nephews.Relatives and friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 - 8:00 at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.  A memorial Mass will be offered on Friday Oct. 28 at 10:00 AM at Church of the Ascension in Bradley Beach.

Emy Lou Snyder

 

Emy Lou Snyder, 90, of Ocean Grove, died Wednesday October 5 at home.  She had worked as a secretary for the Neptune Township Housing Authority before retiring.  Mrs. Snyder was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove where she was a member of the Frances Stern and the Anne Forrester Circles.  She served on the Ocean Grove Citizens Patrol and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ocean Grove Auditorium Ushers.  She also actively attended the Neptune Senior Center, and worked for many years as a step guard at Ocean Grove Beaches. She was predeceased by her husband Henry Hudson Snyder in 1983, by her brother Howard Ruhle in 2006 and by her daughter Jeanne Snyder in 2009.  Surviving are her daughters, Merrill Megill and her husband Chip of Ocean Grove, and Lynn McGrath of Friendsville, TN and her grandchildren, Nicholas and Morgan Megill.  Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.  A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at the funeral home with interment following at the Grove Reformed Church Cemetery, North Bergen.  Those who wish may send flowers, or contributions to the ARC of Monmouth would be appreciated.

Richard Bruce Lepore, age 64, of Perrineville and Ocean Grove, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 25, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He was pre deceased by his father, Alfred “Skippy” Lepore, his mother, Hazel Smith Lepore, of Avenel, NJ, his brother in law Dennis T. Quinlan, of Jamesburg, NJ. and his sister in law Sue Quinlan of Escondido, CA. He is survived by his wife, Teresa Quinlan Lepore, their son Christopher John Lepore, of Perrineville, NJ, his brother and sister in law, John and Donna Lepore, of Brick, NJ, his brother in law and sister in law Dr. Lee Richard Pargot and Arlene J. Pargot of Monroe, NJ, his sister in law Ellen Quinlan of Jamesburg, NJ and his brother in law Ronald Quinlan of Escondido, CA and was blessed with a loving and supportive family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, a great niece, and many cousins. He was also blessed by the love and support of many dear friends.Richard was born in Jersey City, NJ, and after the family moved, resided in Avenel, NJ. He graduated from Colonia Senior High School, in the Class of 1970, and married his high school sweetheart, Teresa Lee Quinlan, also of Avenel, in 1975. The couple celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary in September of 2015 with a trip to Ireland. Richard worked for KB Toys for 34 years, starting with the company when it had only 25 stores. He participated in its growth until it had 1100 stores, and held every store position from Assistant Manager through Manager, District Manager, and eventually Regional Vice President. Already having a family owned business on Main Avenue in Ocean Grove, NJ, “Gingerbreads”, when “Smugglers Cove” became available for sale, Rich saw this as an opportunity to continue to work in more of a retirement setting where he could be his own boss and work for himself. Shortly after establishing his business, Rich again found himself in a leadership role when he became President of the Ocean Grove Area Chamber of Commerce, a position he held until his death. Tragically, “Smugglers Cove” was lost in the devastating Main Avenue fire in February of 2015.Relatives and friends may call at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove, on Sunday, August 28th, from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. A mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Church of the Ascension, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach, on Monday, August 29th, at 11 AM.


NIcholas Matt, Jr.

 

Nicholas Maat, Jr., 93, of Tinton Falls died Sunday August 21 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Nicholas was a truck driver for Colorite Plastics in Ridgefield before retiring. Mr. Maat was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II as a driver with the Red Ball Express. Born in Clifton, he lived there until moving to Ocean Grove in 1978 then Sea Brook Village 11 years ago. He enjoyed spending time in Ocean Grove, was a member of the Ocean Grove Fishing Club and served as pier master. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Antoinette Spina Maat and his son Nicholas Maat, III of Florida. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 PM with funeral services beginning at 7:00 PM at the. Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. Interment will be Thursday at 11:30 AM at the Laurel Grove Cemetery, Totowa, NJ.

Jill A. Flanagan

 

Jill A. Flanagan, 63, of Neptune died Thursday July 7 at home.  Born in Newark, she grew up in North Brunswick and graduated from New Brunswick High School.  She has been a resident of Ocean Grove and Neptune for 30 years. Jill received her Bachelor’s Degree Cum Laude from Kaplan University in Para-Legal Studies. She was predeceased by her parents John J. and Teresa Simon Flanagan and stepchild Angela Morales.  Surviving are her son Kyle Flanagan, her sisters Janis Flanagan and Joanne Pierro,  her husband Jack Morales and his son Jack Jr.  Relatives and friends may call on Thursday July 14 from 6:00 PM with funeral services beginning at 7:30 at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the ASPCA.


Alwyn Aanensen

 

Alwyn Dahl Aanensen of Ocean Grove, NJ, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2016 at Francis Asbury Manor, a caring Methodist community where he lived comfortably since 2011.  He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gladys Jennie Hoffman Aanensen; his Norwegian parents Aanen and Mathea; his brother, Liniol, and sisters, Muriel and Dorothy Aanensen. Alwyn was born August 10, 1920, and raised in Kearny, NJ.  After high school, he attended Newark Academy, then joined the Army Air Corp, serving in World War II.  In 1943 he met the love of his life, Glady, at the Casino in Asbury Park.  They married shortly after and were blessed with one child, Theodore, a name that means “Gift of God.”  The little family joined First Baptist Church of Arlington, in Kearny, where Alwyn became active, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the Men’s Bible Class, the BYF Youth Leader, and the Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, which oversaw construction of a new Baptist church.  He also belonged to the Chamber of Commerce and the Optimist Club. Alwyn was a skilled carpenter, and it became his life’s work in 1951 when he was looking for a new job. He stepped into a phone booth with a broken back and two unemployment checks and prayed to God for work.  His prayer was answered, and soon he had a sign over his first workshop, “Cabinetmaker.”  After college, Ted joined his father and the thriving company got a new sign: “Aanensen and Son.”  Their quality work was known throughout N.J.  Alwyn retired in 1983. He and Glady moved into the charming country home he built in north Jersey near Swartswood Lake. Today, Alywn’s grandson, Matthew, along with Ted, continue the high-end design and construction that Aanensen’s is known for. During his retirement, Al ran the Senior Fellowship at Lafayette Federated Church, and when he moved to Ocean Grove in 2001, he became a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church and joined their Adult Fellowship group.  Al leaves behind his beloved son Ted and wife Gayle, and many nieces and nephews. He was so proud of his three grandchildren and their spouses:  Matthew and Rosalie Aanensen of Colts Neck, NJ, Greta and Sandrine Merhy of Boston, MA, and Timothy Aanensen and wife, Fernanda Nemenz Vitorio, of Ocean Grove.  The apple of his eye was his ten-year-old great-granddaughter, Madeleine Rose Aanensen, the daughter of Matt and Rose. Friends and relatives may call on Tuesday, July 5th, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. until the funeral service at 8 p.m. at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave., Ocean Grove, NJ.  A short graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Arlington Cemetery, Schuyler Avenue, Kearny, NJ.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to United Methodist Communities at Francis Asbury Manor (earmarked “Fellowship Fund”) at 70 Stockton Avenue, Ocean Grove, NJ, 07756.
