Joe Kane
Joe Kane, longtime New York Daily News movie critic, writing as The Phantom of the Movies, died Sunday November 1, 2020 at his Ocean Grove home. Joe was also the editor and publisher of the Phantom of the Movies’ VideoScope magazine. Surviving are his wife and partner, Nancy Naglin, his sister, Joan Nichols and many nieces and nephews and their children. His work endures and his legacy will continue with those who love cinema. |
Paul “PJ” Nunamacher
Paul “P.J.” Nunamacher, 33, of Ocean Grove passed away on Friday, October 23. Paul (P.J. as he was lovingly referred to by his family) was a 2005 graduate of Raritan High School in Hazlet, NJ and attended Brookdale Community College. Paul was an avid sports fan, following the NY Giants and maybe most known for his love of the New Jersey Devils. Paul thoroughly enjoyed politics, always engaging in a passionate debate on current events, but was most passionate about American and European history. Paul worked for Top Gun Professional Sealcoating for the last four years. Paul recently began a career in the hospitality industry, working at The Berkeley Hotel as a food and beverage associate and was a bar back and server at Kelly’s Corner Tavern in Neptune. Paul was predeceased by his father, Paul Nunamacher of Brick and his maternal grandparents Betty and Jack Knego of Iselin. Paul is survived by his mother, Maureen Grogan of Ocean Grove, Sister, Kaitlynn Grogan of Woodbridge, Step-Father,Andrew Grogan of Forked River, grandparents, Ray and Jane Nunamacher of Brick and many loving Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. The memorial services for Paul will be held Friday, October 30th from 3:00 - 6:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. Lee Ann M. DeCapua Duffy
Lee Ann M. DeCapua Duffy, 73, of Neptune and Naples, Florida, died Tuesday, September 22 at home. Lee Ann was a graduate of Neptune High School and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She was a teacher in the Wall Township school system for twenty-five years, first at Central, then at Old Mill School and finally at Wall Intermediate School. After her retirement from education, she began a second career for over ten years as a sales associate at Talbot’s, both in Wall Township and Naples. Lee Ann was an active member of St. Peter’s Church, Naples, Fl., where she served on the decorating committee. She also volunteered on the Landscaping Committee for the Marina Cove Homeowners Association, Naples, Florida. Lee Ann was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, gardening, relaxing with friends on Belmar beach and taking long walks, especially on the boardwalk with her husband, Sean. She was predeceased by her parents, Frank (“Steve”) and Celeste Maccanico DeCapua. Surviving are her husband Sean F. Duffy and many brothers and sisters in law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Philip A. Rock, Jr.
Philip A. Rock, Jr. died on September 8, 2020 at his home in Ocean Grove, NJ at the age of 77. He was born on April 23, 1943 in Plainfield, NJ to Philip A. Rock, Sr., and Julia Sefing Rock. Mr. Rock was raised in Boonton, NJ where he graduated from Boonton High School in 1961.Phil started as a Cub Scout in Pack No. 15 in Boonton and joined Boy Scout Troop No. 74 in Montville, NJ. He received scouting’s highest honor, the Eagle Scout award in 1960. A trained pipefitter, Phil spent the last 30 years of his career with ITT in Nutley, NJ, retiring in 2017. He and his wife, Ann, raised their five daughters in Bloomfield, NJ. Following retirement, the couple moved to Ocean Grove. Always an extrovert, Mr. Rock was active with the Ocean Grove Beautification Project, the Neptune Township Senior Citizen Center, and was a member of the Embury Condominium Association. Phil was predeceased by his first wife, Maria Marin, in 1969. He married Ann Corcoran McGovern in 1973. In addition to his wife, Mr. Rock is survived by their five daughters, Maureen (Jay) Johnston, of Union, Eileen (Greg) Lombardi of Bloomfield, Julia (Ken) Temple of N. Plainfield, Michelle (Tom) Brennan of S. Amboy, and Jayne (Joe) Gangale of Bloomfield and nine grandchildren: Leonard, Rosemary, Thomas, Eugene, Kristopher, Amelia, Regina, James and Conor . Survivors also include his sister, Joyce Rice of Palo Alto, CA, brothers Frederick of Chicago, IL and Lawrence of Leonia, NJ. Cherished for his positive energy, cheerful disposition, and unique ability to help anyone in need, Phil was a friend of Bill W. for 50 years. Phil was always there to listen … and talk. But in that conversation, he really heard you, always remembered you and was rooting for your success. His wife and daughters are truly grateful for the support of friends, family, and Ocean Grove. Leona M. Lee
Leona M. Lee, 83, formerly of Farmingdale, passed away peacefully Wednesday September 2 at the home of her son, Dan McChesney. She was surrounded by her son, granddaughters Amanda McChesney and Chantiel Miller. Also present were Lynn Miller, Leah Jo VanSciver, niece Marisa Napolitani and great grandchildren. She retired as a systems analyst from Ft. Monmouth after over 40 years of service. Born in Asbury Park, she lived in Oakhurst and Farmingdale for many years. She was predeceased by her husband Walter in 2014 and by her son James W. McChesney in 1997. Surviving are son Dan McChesney, Lynn Miller, her sister Joyce Procaccini, her niece Marisa, her granddaughters Amanda, Chantiel and Nicole and great grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Saturday, September 12th, from 10 am to 1 pm with a special memorial service at 12:30 pm at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. |
Carolyn L. Engelken
Carolyn Lynch Engelken, 93 of Barnegat, NJ passed away peacefully on July 20, 2020 in Brick, NJ. Carolyn was born in Paterson, New Jersey where she grew up living with her parents and grandparents on 19th Avenue. Her grandparents were from Germany and enjoyed a natural life of herbs and fresh air outings around upstate NY and NJ, especially the NJ shore. They instilled in her a lifelong love of being by the ocean. Carolyn worshipped at St Paul’s Lutheran Church and graduated from Eastside High School in Paterson. She studied a business curriculum, followed the high school sports teams and enjoyed swing dancing. Carolyn worked for the telephone company after graduation. On Sept 4, 1948 she married her high school sweetheart, Arthur L Engelken. They moved to Irvington and then to Union, NJ where Arthur was teaching and where they raised their 3 daughters. Carolyn loved creating a loving home, holding family parties and expertly sewing most of her daughter’s clothes. After they were grown she went to work at Keene-Stonco where she picked up a skill for using computers. She used her computer as secretary of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, organized her family tree and communicated through email and video chats. She was particularly proud to be able to stay in touch with her grandchildren by email. Carolyn and Arthur retired to Barnegat NJ where their home was filled with family and friends enjoying the NJ shore Many years were spent traveling the country, Iowa, Texas, Germany, Ireland. Arthur, her husband of over 64 years passed away in January 2013. Carolyn is survived by her sister, Patricia Liedel (spouse Larry), daughters Nancy Incorvia (spouse Richard), Gwen Cleaves (spouse Gerard), Susan Nord (spouse Harry). She has seven grandchildren, Richard, Kevin (spouse Jean Anne), Julie (spouse Matt), Matthew (spouse Pam), Megan, Colleen and Emily (spouse Eric) and six great grandchildren, William, Reagan, Pace, Lilly, Warner and Bodie. Carolyn is also survived by her many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. Olive R. Crease
Olive R. Crease, 91, of Neptune, NJ passed away peacefully Friday, July 10, 2020. Olive received her nursing diploma from Trenton State College and had a distinguished career at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where she dedicated her 30 plus year career and was lovingly known as “Creasey”. Olive was predeceased by her husband Samuel F. Crease, her parents, Margaret and Fritz Van Koetsveld, her brother Fred Van Koetsveld and her beloved dog Copper. She is survived by her children; Samuel J. Crease, of Neptune, Robert Crease and his wife Ruth, of Wall, and Barry Crease, of Forked River; sisters Judy and Margaret Van Koetsveld, of Delaware; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Olive was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. She was very proud of her family as evidenced by the hundreds of family photos framed in her house. She loved a good book, 1,000 piece puzzle, horse racing and trying her luck on scratch off tickets. She never missed a birthday card for those she loved. She was witty, had a great sense of humor and could hold her own in any conversation about sports. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her. Family and friends are invited to attend her viewing on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, at 118 Main Ave, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756. Vincent P. Oberlander
Vincent P. Oberlander, 66 of Ocean Grove, died Saturday June 27, 2020 at home. Mr. Oberlander was a kindergarten teacher for the Thurgood Marshall School in Asbury Park before retiring. He was a graduate of Trenton State College. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he lived in Ocean Grove for over 30 years. He was predeceased by his partner R. Scott Hannett in 2006. Surviving are his sisters, Marion Gallagher and Arlene Hasselgren both of South Plainfield, his brother Paul Oberlander of Rumson and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Steven A. Bott
Steven A. Bott, 78, of Wanamassa, Ocean Township, passed away on Monday June 8, 2020 at home. Mr. Bott was a teacher for the Asbury Park Board of Education, spending most of his career at the Asbury Park Middle School before retiring in 1999. During his career, he served as president of the Asbury Park Teachers Association and coached baseball. Steven graduated from Wheaton College (Wheaton, Ill) in 1964 with a B.A. Degree in History. Steven enjoyed sports and he was a lifelong fan of the New York Rangers. He loved Sanibel Island, Florida and he enjoyed several train trips to the West Coast and to the Canadian Rockies. Steve’s strong convictions and great sense of humor led to get-togethers that were times of animated discussion and lots of laughter. Born in Jersey City, he was raised in Teaneck and lived there before moving to Wanamassa in 1964. He was predeceased by his parents, Willis L. and Margaret Jansson Bott, and a brother, Jonathan Bott. Surviving are his 2 brothers and sisters in law, Willis C. Bott and his wife Carol, Thomas L. Bott and his wife Suzanne, his nephews, Jeff, Eric, Kevin and Andrew Bott, his nieces, Jennifer Haraburda and Meredith Baril and his Godson, Patrick Davis. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. |
Virginia Veal
Virginia “Gina/Ginny” Veal, 89, of Ocean Grove died Thursday,June 4, 2020 at the Meridian Health Subacute Rehab at Wall. Gina and her husband were long time residents of Ocean Grove. She and her husband John T. “Jack” Veal were married for 64 years in 2017 when he passed away. Gina was also predeceased by her parents Frank Billard and Marie Preo. Surviving are her cousins Joyce and Richard Bitzer, Barbra Jeranek, Chris Veal and several other first, second and third cousins. Gina was known for her kindness, sense of humor, wonderful cooking and poetry. She is survived by her longtime companion of 41 years, Dave Aitchison, by her sons, Sid Snider and Robert Morrison, by her daughters, Sherry Snider and Deborah Morrison and Donna “Hannah” Huey, by her brother Skippy, her Aunt Marie and numerous grandchildren who remember her as choo choo granny. Daniel Rindell Beaman
Daniel Rindell Beaman Devoted husband, son, brother and uncle. Daniel (Danny) Beaman, 55 years old, passed away on May 17th, 2020. Danny was born and raised in Madison, NJ by his loving parents Allen & Mary Beaman. He was the youngest of five siblings. After graduating from Madison High School, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Boston University. Upon graduation, Danny began a long and successful career in the film & television industry working primarily as a dolly grip and on lighting crews of various production companies in the NY/NJ area. Danny enjoyed his work even though it involved long hours and physical labor in sometimes difficult conditions. Working on film crews was a passion of his and although he had his name in many film and TV credits, he did not do it for the recognition or chance to be near celebrities. In fact, he was reluctant to talk about the star actors/actresses he worked with over the years. Danny lived in NYC for several years post college before settling permanently in Ocean Grove, NJ where he bought an old Victorian cottage two blocks from the beach. He enjoyed spending his free time fixing the place up and renting out the downstairs to various tenants. It was at this time, in 2003, Danny met the love of his life, Dr Kim McFadden. Danny & Kim made sure to enjoy life to the fullest during their free time. They loved going out to eat and being with their friends in and around Ocean Grove. One of Danny’s biggest pleasures came from organizing vacations for the two of them. Their favorite vacation spot was Key West, Florida where they went almost every year. However, their greatest vacation was in 2019 when Danny & Kim did a two-week safari in Africa. It was a vacation of a lifetime that took two years to plan and involved thousands of pictures being taken. Danny is predeceased by his father Allen and his older brother Robert. He is survived by his loving wife Dr Kim McFadden, his mother Mary, sisters Mary Ellen & Helen, brother William (wife Noreen), brothers in law Thomas McFadden (wife Katherine) & Christopher McFadden (wife Kimberly) and sister in law KarenMcFadden. Danny was the uncle to Elizabeth, Emily & Jack Beaman as well as Roark, Jacob & Joseph McFadden. He is also survived by his Uncle Pat Luciano (wife Eileen) and his aunt Anne Luciano. Danny will be missed by all his loving cousins and friends. He was taken from us way too soon and will be missed dearly by all those he touched during his life. He was free spirit who loved and lived life to the fullest. A memorial service honoring Danny will be held at a later date when family and friends can safely gather together. |
Alice Kremer
Alice Kremer, age 91, passed away at home on May 14th. She was born on February 11th, 1929 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Mrs. Kremer immigrated to the United States with her family and she lived in Clifton before settling in Ocean Grove in 1965. Mrs. Kremer was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, reading, gardening, fishing, walks on the boardwalk, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Kremer also helped her husband Ralph with his construction business. Mrs. Kremer was predeceased by her loving husband, Ralph, in 2019. She was also predeceased by her loving parents, Harry and Anna Kossen. She is survived by her son, Harry, and his wife, Patty Kremer, her two grandchildren Amanda and Emma Kremer, and her brother Cornelius Kossen and sister-in-law Lorraine Kossen as well as 2 nieces and a nephew. The family would like to thank the VNA hospice, as well as her caregiver, Joy. The family will hold a celebration of her life at a later date. She will always be loved by her family and will live on in their hearts. |
Linda Stapinski
Linda Stapinski, of Wanamassa, passed away peacefully on May 7th , finally losing the battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was the most generous, loving person and beautiful soul mate of husband, Bill who was blessed to share 38 wonderful years of love, joy, crazy dancing and that warm, heavenly smile. With her business, “Linda’s Crafts”, she hand made hundreds of in demand treasures. Linda was predeceased by her parents Wilbur and Ruth Smith. She is survived by her husband, Bill, her sister Robyn and her husband Harry Kirk, her nephews and nieces, Jaimie and Jamie Beloso, Jason, Sarah, Leah and Ava Kirk, and Craig, Sarah, Dylan and Mason Kirk. Victoria Strychack-Bacolo passed away on April 25, 2020, inside her Ocean Grove home of 25 years. She was 68. In her own words:I had a rich life.Not by your monetary standards.I was born a believer.I had a small family of origin who loved me — mother Jane (deceased) and sister Patricia (surviving).I was given a soul mate — husband Mauro Bacolo (deceased) — and a child of God — Adrian (surviving) — who were devoted to me.I had friends beyond measure. Everyone looked after me.I had art, books, music.I had horticulture, botany and nature.There were adventures near and far.There was health and strength.There was God above all.I had a rich life.A memorial service celebrating Vicki’s life will be announced at a later date. Gail Shaffer
Gail Dorothy Shaffer left this earth on April 23, 2020, two weeks short of her 84th birthday. Gail grew up in Berkeley Heights and graduated Hood College, Frederick, Md., and went on to teach 42 years at Governor Livingston Regional High School. While Gail was short in stature, she was long on energy. A long-time resident, she was active in Berkeley Heights: volunteering with the Berkeley Heights Historical Society, volunteering with the Berkeley Heights rescue squad, and volunteer at Covenant House in NYC. Gail was the cheerleading coach for many years,as well as the yearbook advisor for decades and all round student advocate. The pinnacle of her career was being named New Jersey’s Teacher of the Year in 1993. Gail purchased her second home in Ocean Grove in 1965 and spent many happy days there with family and friends. Upon her retirement in 1998, Gail permanently moved to her home in Ocean Grove and settled into her life including Ocean Grove Historical President, managing the Historical House tour and all things Ocean Grove. Gail’s love for Ocean Grove was only matched by her love of family and friends. Gail is predeceased by her parents, Clifford and Mildred (nee Burgmiller) Shaffer. While Gail was never married with no children of her own, she was a “second mom” to many and cared about their life goals and adventures. Gail’s love of entertaining was renown. Many friends and family remember her “game nights”. Gail leaves behind cousins and many friends who will miss her greatly. The funeral and burial are private. A “Celebration of Life” will be held at a later date in Ocean Grove when the quarantine is lifted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ocean Grove Camp Association. |
Daniel Bryant Hall
Daniel Bryant Hall passed away peacefully on April 17, 2020 at the Chelsea at Tinton Falls after a courageous battle with dementia and complications from COVID-19. Daniel was born to Nancy Hall and raised in Eatontown, NJ by his mother and grandparents, Blanche and Fielding Gwynn. He is a Long Branch High School graduate who upon graduation enlisted in the United States Army. Following his discharge, he was employed by the United States Postal Service in Nyack, NY and later the Borough of Deal. After a reduction in postal workers, Daniel was employed as a foreman at Naval Weapon Station Earle until he retired in 1995 after 31 years of Federal Service. After his retirement, Daniel was employed as a livery driver with Clayton Limousine Service in Spring Lake for over 10 years. Daniel was a devoted son, husband, and father. Many days you could find him coaching softball, soccer, and basketball teams for his children. He enjoyed spending time and vacationing with his beloved wife, Lillian, following his retirement. Daniel was a Master Mason, Scottish Rite 32 degree. He was the Past Commander of The American Legion Post 346 in Neptune where he was also a proud member of Post 346’s pool team leading them to multiple league championships. Daniel was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Hall, wife, Lillian Hall, mother-in-law, Dorris O’Neil, and father-in-law, Henry O’Neil. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hall, and her wife, Janna Rosario of Yonkers, NY, and his son, Scott M Hall, and grandchildren Adalie and Scott M Hall Jr. of Neptune, NJ. Services will be held at a later date. |
Lawrence Carmody
Lawrence Carmody, 77, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2020. Larry was born and raised in Elizabeth N.J. and lived in Wall Township prior to residing in Willow Springs in Brick. He was predeceased by his parents Leo Carmody and Grace Carmody and his sister Marie Burdge. Larry is survived by his wife Antoinette Carmody of 49 years, son Dennis Carmody, daughter Laura Carmody, daugher-in-law Denise, son-in-law Charlie Formato and his granchildren Kevin and Michael, sister Grace Sinnott of Cranford, N.J and many nieces and nephews. Larry owned Larry’s Liquor Locker in Neptune City and worked for Manasquan High School in his later career. He enjoyed outdoor activities and owned a vacation home in the Adirondacks, snowmobiling and fishing and boating, his true home away from home. He loved various outdoor activities and in later years attending his grandchildren’s events and he was a neighborhood fixture working in his yard and greeting everyone in front of his home in Allenwood during his retirement years. In light of the restrictions surrounding the Coronavirus pandemic, the family has determined that there will be no public viewing and funeral services are private. |
