Evelyn Louise Knudsen, 96, died peacefully on Saturday October 14, 2017 at Manor by the Sea in Ocean Grove. Born Evelyn Louise Hancher on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1921, in Manhattan, NY to loving parents Arthur and Marie Hancher.  As a young child they moved to East Orange, NJ where she had a wonderful childhood filled with love, music, faith , Church and friends, especially her best childhood “forever friends”, Lois Lippincott and Theo Dykstra.  She married “her Joe”, Joseph Howard Autenrieth in 1943 and they had two children, Elaine Marie Autenrieth and Howard Dennis Autenrieth and lived in Springfield, NJ for many years.  She married Marvin Knudsen in 1972 and they resided in Ocean Grove.  She has also lived at the Methodist Home, “ Francis Asbury Manor” in Ocean Grove for over 20 years.  As a resident there she made Many caring and steadfast friends, was the acting librarian and secretary for the resident council. She shared her love of music on the baby grand piano and chapel organ almost every day and held classes for all interested in one of her hobbies, astronomy, before moving to Manor by the Sea for the last two plus years of her life.  The family lovingly wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. Jeffrey M. Beal, her family physician for over 30 years since the start of his practice in Ocean Grove, for his exceptional quality care and caring nature.  He was always there with a soft comforting voice and smile, - “Hi Eve”, and listening, never being rushed when in his care.  Also the family would like to say thank you for the excellent care she received at Manor by the Sea, by the nurses, aides, and the entire staff who never let her feel alone. While at Manor by the Sea, the Meridian Hospice Nurses, clergy and staff played and indispensable part in her care by being there with genuine kindness and assistance to Eve and her family by keeping in touch with them several times a week and seeing her almost every day. Thank you so much.  As a young adult, after graduating East Orange High School with honors, she worked as a bank bookkeeper and a music teacher, waiting to be accepted to the Julliard School of music.  During her lifetime she has given of herself in many ways.  She was a USO girl based in Newark during World War, II, she wound armature with her mother for the war cause, was a Sunday School Teacher and a girl scout musical assistant.  Eve was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove, a life member of the VFW auxiliary of Post 2639 and a member of the American Legion Post 346, both Neptune. In loving Memory she was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Marie Hancher, by her husbands, Joseph Howard Autenrieth and Marvin Maurice Knudsen and by her forever friends, Lois Lippincott, Theo Dykstra and Sarah Mungo.  She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Elaine Poultney and her husband, Paul, by her son, Dennis Autenrieth and his wife, Penny, by her grandchildren, Cynthia Marie Cadiente, and her husband Reynaldo, and Susan Lynn Mungo and her husband, Joseph, by her great grandchildren, Michael Alan Cann, and his wife Sandy, Anthony Michael Mungo, Taylor Lynn Vancour and her husband, Seth, Emily Marie Cadiente and her best friend, Alex Silva, Christopher Matthew Mungo and his wife, Jessica and Marissa Mikayla Mungo, by her great great grandchildren, Elaina Sophia Vancour, Tillie Lynn Vancour, Ava Marie Vancour, Noah Alan Vancour, Brantley Allan Mungo and Leigha Marie Mungo. On a personal heart felt and loving note, your family wishes to say how much we love you, how much happiness you have brought to our lives, how much you have taught us, by “Simple Example” to be the best people we can be. You encouraged us, listened to us, shred with us your smile, laughter, humor, singing, dancing, music and piano, cooking, baking, and hobbies. You shared with us stories of family history and love of God and faith. We are your biggest cheerleaders. “You Go O-NE”!!. You are and will always be our #1 (on-e) and our shining star. We will be loving you always until we meet again and along with a happy smile in our hearts, when thinking of you. Safe journey to the great beyond and “your special star” just for you on your way to heaven and the good Lord God, you love so much. Never a goodbye, just a “To-Da - Loo” and a curtsy to you. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 PM at the funeral home with interment following at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. Philip Cameron Herr, II, age 81, of Ocean Grove New Jersey, formerly of  Radnor, PA, went home to be with his Lord Thursday, October 5, 2017 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s and a briefer battle with leukemia.  Philip was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia.  He was a graduate of Lansdowne-Aldan High School (1954), Dickinson College undergraduate (1958) and Law (1960) and Villanova Law (LLM in Taxation 1986). He married his beloved bride, Karla Marie Rueckert in 1960 after meeting on a blind date.  Philip served six months active duty in the U.S. Army Reserves (1961) and also Reserve Duty  (1961 to 1967). Philip was a proud partner along with his father and grandfather in the firm of Herr & Herr, from the time of his law school graduation in 1960, until his retirement in 2007.  He was joined at Herr & Herr by his dear friend Jack Potts, with whom he shared a lifetime of stories, anecdotes and experiences. Philip served on various boards including Chairman of the Board of Frankfort Trust Company, Hudson Manhattan Corporation, Covenant Life Insurance Company (formerly Presbyterian Minister Fund, later becoming Nationwide Insurance), Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, William Penn Foundation, Lebanon Valley College, Radnor United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church Asbury Park and chairman of the Board of The Biblical Historical Center (formerly Explorations in Antiquity Center) to name a few, holding positions of leadership in nearly all. Retiring to Ocean Grove in 2007, Philip and Karla poured themselves into their community, Philip was a member of the Camp Meeting Association’s board from 1975 until his death, taking emeritus status in 2010 and serving as President from 1988 to 1994. They purchased and restored the property housing Day’s Ice Cream and The Starving Artist Restaurant in 1992 and were able to entertain their three children, their spouses and their eight grandchildren in this beautiful setting. Philip is preceded in death by his parents Philip and Helen Herr, his uncle John Herr, his dear Aunt Margaret Herr and cherished cousins Robert and James Herr. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years Karla Rueckert Herr of Ocean Grove, his sister Helen Ford of Kennett Square, PA, sons, John Herr and wife Tricia from Mechanicsville, MD and Peter Herr and wife Diane of Oakhurst, NJ and daughter Martha Cuttrell and husband Rick of Shark River Hills, NJ, eight adored grandchildren: Kaitlyn Herr of MD , Richard Cuttrell of NJ, Samantha Cuttrell  of OR, Karl Herr of MD, and Bailey Herr, William Cuttrell, Morgan Herr and Taylor Herr all of NJ  and numerous relatives, colleagues and friends. Phillip loved classical music, he loved problem solving, loved sitting on his porch with a good book (nonfiction of course!) or better still, a good friend.  He loved this beautiful Atlantic Ocean and he loved his Savior and Lord. But in his own words, Philip’s “joys include(d): family, friends and lifting the load of others!” And to quote him further, “The best is still ahead!”  A memorial service celebrating the life of Philip Cameron Herr will be held at First United Methodist Church 906 Grand Avenue (between1st and 2nd avenues), Asbury Park, NJ on Monday, October 9th at 5pm.  In lieu of flowers, donation can be made in Philip’s name to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association 54 Pitman Ave, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756 or the Biblical History Center, PO Box 3900 LaGrange, GA 30241. Carmelo Santos Mendoza, 91, of Ocean Grove, died Tuesday September 12 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.  He was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico, and was raised in Guayama, Puerto Rico before coming to the United States in 1950. He lived in New York City from 1950-1991 where he met his wife Ruth Phillips. There he made his life and raised his family.  Mr. Mendoza worked in the Department of Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital in New York City until retiring. He was also the custodian to The Second Presbyterian Church and the Night Doorman at 360 Central Park West. He moved to Ocean Grove in July 1991, where he would spend the rest of his life. He was a volunteer at the Neptune Senior Center since 2005. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2003. Everyone affectionately referred to him as “Grandpa”. He was often seen sitting on his porch listening to music and waving to passerby’s. He perpetually had a smile on his face. He was filled with an immeasurable amount of love and joy and he shared it with everyone. Surviving are his daughter, Judy Mendoza and his grand daughter, Tori Timoney.  Services will be private. 

Judy L. Soltis, 79, of Ocean Grove, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, September 4, 2017.  “Judy Mom” (affectionately known by many) loved her Savior, her Family and her Ocean Grove.  This was evidenced by her active involvement in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association. Originally born in Harwood Mines, PA, Judy lived in Succasunna and Brookside, NJ before moving to Ocean Grove 16 years ago.  She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Soltis in 2013.  Surviving are three daughters, Susan L. O’Brien and her husband Terence P. O’Brien of Andover, NJ, Judy B. Soltis of Ocean Grove, Karen L. Soltis of Whippany, NJ and six grandchildren, Elisabeth, Victoria, Alexandra, Timothy, Olivia and Jonathan O’Brien.  A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday September 23 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ocean Grove Bishop Janes Tabernacle.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (Ocean Grove) or the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association. 

Robert passed away on August 28, 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dolores Daly Hagerman, daughter, Sharon Purpuro, sons Eric and Robert T, granddaughter, Jennifer Wurst, grandsons, Robert C., Jason, Justin & Ryan Hagerman, Stephen Gubitosa, Christopher Zepada, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Hazel, sisters, Alma La Barre and Betty Brace and brothers Charles, Mulford and Joseph. Robert attended Neptune H.S. Before retiring in 2000 he worked for Prudential and Hanover Insurance Companies, and Fairway Insurance, Avon, NJ. Robert loved cooking for his family and friends and an avid NY Giants fan - so be sure to wear your favorite Giant attire. A celebration of life service will be held 12PM, Sat. 9/2/17 at the West Grove United Methodist Memorial Church, 102 Walnut Street, Neptune, NJ. Beatrice Jacqueline Hooper, 91, of Ocean Grove, died Wednesday August 23, 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.  Jackie was a member of the Ocean Grove Ladies Auxiliary and the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO). She attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove, was very active in the Presbyterian Homes of New Jersey and Meals on Wheels in Ocean Grove.  Born in Newark, Jackie grew up in West Orange, then lived in East Brunswick for 30 years before moving to Ocean Grove over 40 years ago.  She was predeceased by her brother James Warren Crelin, Jr.  Surviving is her husband of almost 68 years, Donald E. Hooper, her daughter, Susan Bishop and her husband Michael of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Canada, two grandchildren, Kimberly Elmer and her husband Peter of Brick Township and Keith Bishop and his wife Jennifer of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and three great grandchildren, Katherine and Kayla Elmer and Adaline Bishop.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday August 26 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, the Ocean Grove Ladies Auxiliary, both at PO Box 248, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756,  St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove, the PEO at https://donations.peointernational.org, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
