Roland D. Howard

 

 Roland D. Howard , 78, of Neptune City, died Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center with his beloved wife of 56 years, Nancy, by his side.  Mr. Howard (known as “Doug”) was a teacher with the Monmouth County Vocational School System for 26 years before retiring.  He excelled at fixing anything with a motor and loved fishing and cracking a good joke.  He was an exempt member of the Washington Company of the Ocean Grove Fire Department.  Born in Kinston, N.C., he moved to Millburn, N.J. at the age of 19, where he met his wife.  They lived in Irvington before moving to Ocean Grove in 1962.  He remained a resident of Neptune and Neptune City.  Surviving are his wife, Nancy E. Howard, son, Randy D. Howard and wife, Deborah, daughter Holly H. Heron, sisters: Merle Jean, Maxine, Dixie, Diana, Grace, Rose, Daisy, Carmen, and their families, his granddaughters Hadley Heron, Courtney Schiereck, grandson William Schiereck and great-grandchildren Emerald Bowers and Alina Schiereck. Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday January 16 from 4pm to 7pm with a Fireman’s service at 6:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.

Harold J. Ford

Harold J. Ford, 93, of Bradley Beach died Thursday December 28, 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Harold was a commercial fisherman and later managed the Fisherman’s Co-op in Point Pleasant. Mr. Ford enlisted right after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in the Navy during World War II. He remained active his whole life, taking up walking and jogging after his retirement at age 75 and competed in many 5K and 10K races in the 70+ age divisions. He was always the first up and out to door every morning.And although Parkinson’s slowed him down in his 80s, he didn’t stop moving, taking up boxing during the last six months of his life.Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident of Bradley Beach. Harold will be missed by his friends, neighbors and also his community at the Church of the Ascension where he was a long time communicant, usher and member of the Holy Name Society. Surviving are his wife Philomena, his sons James and his wife Adrienne of Abingdon, PA, and Richard and his wife Marishyl of Decatur, GA, his sister Joan Ward of Lakewood and his four grandchildren Seamus, Elizabeth, Evelyn and Beckett. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday January 4 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A mass of Christian burial will be offered on Friday at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Ascension 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach, Interment will be at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytow

Pearl D. Halifko, 91, of Neptune City, died Wednesday December 20, 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Mrs. Halifko had worked as a nurse before retiring and also worked in a sewing factory. Born in Sayreville, she lived in Perth Amboy, Carteret, Trenton and Piscataway before moving to the shore area one year ago. She was predeceased by her husbands, Joseph W. Halifko, Jr., and Stephen Judin. Surviving are her 3 sons, James B. Halifko and his wife Jeanne of Tuckerton, Joseph William Halifko, III and his wife Terry of Shark River Hills, Neptune, and Daniel Halifko and his wife Mary of Orlando, FL, her sister in law, Fran Zygmund of Sayreville and two grandchildren, Adrienne Hilliard and her husband Richard of Stanleyville, VA and Benjamin Halifko of Bordentown Township. Services and inurnment of Pearl and Joseph at the Brigader General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be private for the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Entombment with military honors will follow at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. In lieu of Flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Paul’s Methodist Church.

Alice Smith

Alice May Smith, 74, of Jackson, passed into eternal life on December 1, 2017.  Born in Neptune, she was raised and lived most of her life in Neptune City, additionally living in Eatontown, Bradley Beach, Neptune City, and Millville, before settling in Jackson. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.  She was predeceased by her cherished husband Willard L. Smith in 2016,  her parents Leroy and Mable E. Brown, and her brother Leroy Brown. Surviving are her beloved daughters; Linda C. Smith, Bonnie J. Smith, and Janeen M. Smith of Toms River, and Deborah L. Smith of Wall. She is also survived by her sisters Nancy Conover and her husband Richard of Cream Ridge, Bette Paladino of Wall, Linda Smith and her husband Robert of Brick. She also leaves behind cousins, nieces, nephews, and many precious friends.Alice devoted her life to her faith and family.  She loved music, camping out,  history, nature, and all God’s creatures.  She was very artistic and imaginative, and enjoyed sewing and crafting.  She had an interest in various cultures, and had penpals from all over the world.  She corresponded with Barbara Bredgaard 
of England for over 50 years. A brief chapel service will be held at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle  Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown on Monday, January 29th at 1pm with interment following.  In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Popcorn Park Zoo would be appreciated.

Helen Reaser

Helen Dunn Reaser passed away on November 21, 2017 at Manor-by-the Sea in Ocean Grove, NJ.  She was born at home in Montgomery,  on December 23, 1920, to Alma LeVan Dunn and Myron Ralph Dunn.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Reaser; sisters Marie, Florence, and Carolyn; and grandson, Luke Mitchell.  Helen is survived by her daughter, Roberta Reaser Mitchell of Ocean Grove, NJ; grandsons Matthew Mitchell (Rachel) of Drexel Hill, PA and Mark Mitchell (Alison) of Little Silver, NJ; and five great grandchildren:  Meredith, Ethan, Elijah, Ella and Samuel. A graduate of Montgomery High School, she was thrilled to be named Valedictorian of her class.  As a secretary, she was proud of her typing, spelling  and stenography skills. Helen worked at an ordnance facility in Williamsport, PA, during WWII.  Later she was a secretary for the Superintendent of Schools in Montgomery, PA. In 1985, Helen and Bob retired and moved to Bradley Beach, NJ, to help care for their newly born grandson, Luke Mitchell.  Family was always important to her and she loved to can and cook for them, especially peanut butter fudge for Luke. A private service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery, Montgomery, PA.

 


Shirley Boss

 

Shirley Boss passed away on November 29,2017 at the age of 82 surrounded by her family. She was proceeded in death by her son W Michael. She leaves behind a daughter Nancy and a son Cory. She was the beloved grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 10. She will be especially missed by her goddaughter Carol. She will be missed by her many friends and family and her cat missy. Shirley was born in Lyndhurst NJ February 1935.  She graduated from Clifton High School. She married her high school sweetheart at 17. She later divorced and moved to Saint Petersburg, Fla. She worked as a medical home health aid helping the elderly. She struggled with alcohol in early life, joining AA and celebrated 40 years of sobriety in 2017 with pride. In her association with Alcoholics Anonymous she sponsored hundreds of people changing lives for the better with the program.  She was a Christian and loved being in Ocean Grove, attending services in The Great Auditorium. Her love for god and counseling left an imprint on many, many lives.

 


Patrick J. Matthews

Patrick Matthews of Ocean Grove died Saturday, October 21, 2017. Born in County Louth, Ireland, and educated at the Christian Brothers School there, Patrick learned the typesetting trade in Ireland. He worked in England for a few years before immigrating to the United States in 1958. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1959 to 1961 and in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1961 to 1965. Patrick later went on to become one of the founders and owners of Typographic Innovations Inc. (TGI) in New York City, where he led the company until retiring in 1992. In addition to all his hard work as a businessman and father, Patrick was also known as a runner, a golfer, a reader, and a sailor. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Joan Matthews, by his children Tim Matthews of Burlingame, California; Cara Matthews of Norwalk, Connecticut; and Craig Matthews of Haskell, New Jersey; and his sisters Maureen Gleeson of Dublin, Ireland, and Nuala Lynch of Bettystown, County Meath, Ireland. Patrick was predeceased by his parents, James and Margaret Connolly Mathews, and by his siblings Rita Cooney, James Mathews, Kathleen Shortall, and Eileen Finegan.  Relatives and friends may call on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avene, Ocean Grove.  A celebration of Patrick’s life will be hed on Friday at 10:30 AM at the funeral home.  

Evelyn “Eve” Knudsen

Evelyn Louise Knudsen, 96, died peacefully on Saturday October 14, 2017 at Manor by the Sea in Ocean Grove. Born Evelyn Louise Hancher on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1921, in Manhattan, NY to loving parents Arthur and Marie Hancher.  As a young child they moved to East Orange, NJ where she had a wonderful childhood filled with love, music, faith , Church and friends, especially her best childhood “forever friends”, Lois Lippincott and Theo Dykstra.  She married “her Joe”, Joseph Howard Autenrieth in 1943 and they had two children, Elaine Marie Autenrieth and Howard Dennis Autenrieth and lived in Springfield, NJ for many years.  She married Marvin Knudsen in 1972 and they resided in Ocean Grove.  She has also lived at the Methodist Home, “ Francis Asbury Manor” in Ocean Grove for over 20 years.  As a resident there she made Many caring and steadfast friends, was the acting librarian and secretary for the resident council. She shared her love of music on the baby grand piano and chapel organ almost every day and held classes for all interested in one of her hobbies, astronomy, before moving to Manor by the Sea for the last two plus years of her life.  The family lovingly wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. Jeffrey M. Beal, her family physician for over 30 years since the start of his practice in Ocean Grove, for his exceptional quality care and caring nature.  He was always there with a soft comforting voice and smile, - “Hi Eve”, and listening, never being rushed when in his care.  Also the family would like to say thank you for the excellent care she received at Manor by the Sea, by the nurses, aides, and the entire staff who never let her feel alone. While at Manor by the Sea, the Meridian Hospice Nurses, clergy and staff played and indispensable part in her care by being there with genuine kindness and assistance to Eve and her family by keeping in touch with them several times a week and seeing her almost every day. Thank you so much.  As a young adult, after graduating East Orange High School with honors, she worked as a bank bookkeeper and a music teacher, waiting to be accepted to the Julliard School of music.  During her lifetime she has given of herself in many ways.  She was a USO girl based in Newark during World War, II, she wound armature with her mother for the war cause, was a Sunday School Teacher and a girl scout musical assistant.  Eve was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove, a life member of the VFW auxiliary of Post 2639 and a member of the American Legion Post 346, both Neptune. In loving Memory she was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Marie Hancher, by her husbands, Joseph Howard Autenrieth and Marvin Maurice Knudsen and by her forever friends, Lois Lippincott, Theo Dykstra and Sarah Mungo.  She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Elaine Poultney and her husband, Paul, by her son, Dennis Autenrieth and his wife, Penny, by her grandchildren, Cynthia Marie Cadiente, and her husband Reynaldo, and Susan Lynn Mungo and her husband, Joseph, by her great grandchildren, Michael Alan Cann, and his wife Sandy, Anthony Michael Mungo, Taylor Lynn Vancour and her husband, Seth, Emily Marie Cadiente and her best friend, Alex Silva, Christopher Matthew Mungo and his wife, Jessica and Marissa Mikayla Mungo, by her great great grandchildren, Elaina Sophia Vancour, Tillie Lynn Vancour, Ava Marie Vancour, Noah Alan Vancour, Brantley Allan Mungo and Leigha Marie Mungo. On a personal heart felt and loving note, your family wishes to say how much we love you, how much happiness you have brought to our lives, how much you have taught us, by “Simple Example” to be the best people we can be. You encouraged us, listened to us, shred with us your smile, laughter, humor, singing, dancing, music and piano, cooking, baking, and hobbies. You shared with us stories of family history and love of God and faith. We are your biggest cheerleaders. “You Go O-NE”!!. You are and will always be our #1 (on-e) and our shining star. We will be loving you always until we meet again and along with a happy smile in our hearts, when thinking of you. Safe journey to the great beyond and “your special star” just for you on your way to heaven and the good Lord God, you love so much. Never a goodbye, just a “To-Da - Loo” and a curtsy to you. Philip C. Herr, II

 

Philip Cameron Herr, II, age 81, of Ocean Grove New Jersey, formerly of  Radnor, PA, went home to be with his Lord Thursday, October 5, 2017 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s and a briefer battle with leukemia.  Philip was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia.  He was a graduate of Lansdowne-Aldan High School (1954), Dickinson College undergraduate (1958) and Law (1960) and Villanova Law (LLM in Taxation 1986). He married his beloved bride, Karla Marie Rueckert in 1960 after meeting on a blind date.  Philip served six months active duty in the U.S. Army Reserves (1961) and also Reserve Duty  (1961 to 1967). Philip was a proud partner along with his father and grandfather in the firm of Herr & Herr, from the time of his law school graduation in 1960, until his retirement in 2007.  He was joined at Herr & Herr by his dear friend Jack Potts, with whom he shared a lifetime of stories, anecdotes and experiences. Philip served on various boards including Chairman of the Board of Frankfort Trust Company, Hudson Manhattan Corporation, Covenant Life Insurance Company (formerly Presbyterian Minister Fund, later becoming Nationwide Insurance), Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, William Penn Foundation, Lebanon Valley College, Radnor United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church Asbury Park and chairman of the Board of The Biblical Historical Center (formerly Explorations in Antiquity Center) to name a few, holding positions of leadership in nearly all. Retiring to Ocean Grove in 2007, Philip and Karla poured themselves into their community, Philip was a member of the Camp Meeting Association’s board from 1975 until his death, taking emeritus status in 2010 and serving as President from 1988 to 1994. They purchased and restored the property housing Day’s Ice Cream and The Starving Artist Restaurant in 1992 and were able to entertain their three children, their spouses and their eight grandchildren in this beautiful setting. Philip is preceded in death by his parents Philip and Helen Herr, his uncle John Herr, his dear Aunt Margaret Herr and cherished cousins Robert and James Herr. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years Karla Rueckert Herr of Ocean Grove, his sister Helen Ford of Kennett Square, PA, sons, John Herr and wife Tricia from Mechanicsville, MD and Peter Herr and wife Diane of Oakhurst, NJ and daughter Martha Cuttrell and husband Rick of Shark River Hills, NJ, eight adored grandchildren: Kaitlyn Herr of MD , Richard Cuttrell of NJ, Samantha Cuttrell  of OR, Karl Herr of MD, and Bailey Herr, William Cuttrell, Morgan Herr and Taylor Herr all of NJ  and numerous relatives, colleagues and friends. Phillip loved classical music, he loved problem solving, loved sitting on his porch with a good book (nonfiction of course!) or better still, a good friend.  He loved this beautiful Atlantic Ocean and he loved his Savior and Lord. But in his own words, Philip’s “joys include(d): family, friends and lifting the load of others!” And to quote him further, “The best is still ahead!”  A memorial service celebrating the life of Philip Cameron Herr will be held at First United Methodist Church 906 Grand Avenue (between1st and 2nd avenues), Asbury Park, NJ on Monday, October 9th at 5pm.  In lieu of flowers, donation can be made in Philip’s name to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association 54 Pitman Ave, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756 or the Biblical History Center, PO Box 3900 LaGrange, GA 30241. Carmelo Santos Mendoza

Carmelo Santos Mendoza, 91, of Ocean Grove, died Tuesday September 12 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.  He was born in Salinas, Puerto Rico, and was raised in Guayama, Puerto Rico before coming to the United States in 1950. He lived in New York City from 1950-1991 where he met his wife Ruth Phillips. There he made his life and raised his family.  Mr. Mendoza worked in the Department of Psychiatry at Bellevue Hospital in New York City until retiring. He was also the custodian to The Second Presbyterian Church and the Night Doorman at 360 Central Park West. He moved to Ocean Grove in July 1991, where he would spend the rest of his life. He was a volunteer at the Neptune Senior Center since 2005. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth in 2003. Everyone affectionately referred to him as “Grandpa”. He was often seen sitting on his porch listening to music and waving to passerby’s. He perpetually had a smile on his face. He was filled with an immeasurable amount of love and joy and he shared it with everyone. Surviving are his daughter, Judy Mendoza and his grand daughter, Tori Timoney.  Services will be private. 


Judy L. Soltis

 

Judy L. Soltis, 79, of Ocean Grove, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, September 4, 2017.  “Judy Mom” (affectionately known by many) loved her Savior, her Family and her Ocean Grove.  This was evidenced by her active involvement in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association. Originally born in Harwood Mines, PA, Judy lived in Succasunna and Brookside, NJ before moving to Ocean Grove 16 years ago.  She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Soltis in 2013.  Surviving are three daughters, Susan L. O’Brien and her husband Terence P. O’Brien of Andover, NJ, Judy B. Soltis of Ocean Grove, Karen L. Soltis of Whippany, NJ and six grandchildren, Elisabeth, Victoria, Alexandra, Timothy, Olivia and Jonathan O’Brien.  A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday September 23 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ocean Grove Bishop Janes Tabernacle.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (Ocean Grove) or the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association. 


Robert Hagerman

 

Robert passed away on August 28, 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dolores Daly Hagerman, daughter, Sharon Purpuro, sons Eric and Robert T, granddaughter, Jennifer Wurst, grandsons, Robert C., Jason, Justin & Ryan Hagerman, Stephen Gubitosa, Christopher Zepada, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Hazel, sisters, Alma La Barre and Betty Brace and brothers Charles, Mulford and Joseph. Robert attended Neptune H.S. Before retiring in 2000 he worked for Prudential and Hanover Insurance Companies, and Fairway Insurance, Avon, NJ. Robert loved cooking for his family and friends and an avid NY Giants fan - so be sure to wear your favorite Giant attire. A celebration of life service will be held 12PM, Sat. 9/2/17 at the West Grove United Methodist Memorial Church, 102 Walnut Street, Neptune, NJ. Beatrice Jacqueline “Jackie” Hooper

 

Beatrice Jacqueline Hooper, 91, of Ocean Grove, died Wednesday August 23, 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.  Jackie was a member of the Ocean Grove Ladies Auxiliary and the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO). She attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Ocean Grove, was very active in the Presbyterian Homes of New Jersey and Meals on Wheels in Ocean Grove.  Born in Newark, Jackie grew up in West Orange, then lived in East Brunswick for 30 years before moving to Ocean Grove over 40 years ago.  She was predeceased by her brother James Warren Crelin, Jr.  Surviving is her husband of almost 68 years, Donald E. Hooper, her daughter, Susan Bishop and her husband Michael of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Canada, two grandchildren, Kimberly Elmer and her husband Peter of Brick Township and Keith Bishop and his wife Jennifer of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and three great grandchildren, Katherine and Kayla Elmer and Adaline Bishop.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday August 26 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, the Ocean Grove Ladies Auxiliary, both at PO Box 248, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756,  St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove, the PEO at https://donations.peointernational.org, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.


Genevieve Youngs Barbur

Genevieve Youngs Barbur, 81, of Avon NJ, died on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at Care One at Wall.  Gennie grew up in Ocean Grove NJ and graduated from Neptune High School in 1953.   She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Barbur, her parents, Jack and Genevieve Youngs, the mother who loved and raised her, Mildred Youngs, and her sister, Jane West.  After high school, Gennie worked for the United States Army at Fort Monmouth NJ, where she met husband, Tom.  They married in 1957 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Ocean Grove.  After having children, Gennie earned a college degree at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy NY. Gennie was an avid reader, an accomplished cook and an active member of Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Spring Lake NJ.  Gennie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved to host family gatherings.  She is survived by her two children, Linda Barbur Henderson and Peter Barbur, her three grandchildren, Timothy, Elisabeth and Reid Henderson, her sister, Jacqueline Capestro, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Friday, August 25, 2017, at Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church 907 Fourth Avenue, Spring Lake, NJ.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Andrew’s UMC Memorial Fund.


Jacqueline Wanda Catley

Jacqueline Wanda Catley, 92, of Ocean Grove passed away peacefully on August 10, 2017. Jackie was born in Newark, and moved to the Jersey Shore as a young child. She attended Bradley Park Elementary School and graduated in 1943 from Neptune High School as the valedictorian of her class. At Neptune High School, she was president of the GAA and editor of The Blazer (newspaper). Jackie was employed by Bell Telephone as an operator in Asbury Park . Eventually, she became part owner of the Grove City Cleaners in Ocean Grove. She was very active in many organizations such as the Jersey Shore Women’s Club, OG Elementary PTA, The Neptune Republican Club, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, the Bradley Beach Food Pantry and Red and Black Association. She was a volunteer reader at Bradley Beach Elementary School, a trustee of the Neptune Senior Center and ‘First Mom of Neptune’ when her son was the mayor. She was an excellent bowler who was on numerous teams, enjoyed playing poker and going on trips to Atlantic City.Jackie loved organizing travels by car, plane, bus, and ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Germany, Italy, New Orleans to name just some of her destinations. Of course, she loved her visits to Sanibel Island with friends and family. On the island she spent hours walking, biking, and collecting shells while practicing the ‘Sanibel Stoop’. Her many trips were archived in her very detailed photo albums. Jackie was a wonderful, loving mom and “nan”, who treasured her time with her children and grandchildren, and their friends. She was a great cook, baking delicious blueberry and apple pies, making terrific deviled eggs and whipping up dozens of brownies. She loved Vic’s pizza, black and white milkshakes and crumb buns. Sitting on her front porch in Ocean Grove was special to her and her Franklin Avenue neighbors. She was a gracious hostess who welcomed friends and family into her home for many celebrations. Jackie was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Hadford Catley and her grandsons Brett Calabrese and Jonathan Doughty and by her parents, Wanda and James Cullen. Jackie is survived by her daughters, Gale Lynch and her husband Jim, Sanibel, FL; Barbara Calabrese and her husband Jay, Wall; and son, former Monmouth County. Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Catley and his wife, Marilynn and two grandchildren, Lauren Buss and her husband, Kris, and Kearstyn Catley. Jackie adored her great grandchild, Kali Buss. She, also, leaves behind nieces, nephews, and many precious friends. We want to thank the compassionate, thoughtful, and professional staff at Coral Harbor Healthcare Center (formerly MediCenter). They kept our mom active as long as possible and comfortable until her death. A celebration of Jackie’s life will be held at Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue on Saturday, August 19 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Linda Lee Madsen Roberts

Linda Lee Madsen Roberts, 70, of Ocean Grove passed on to her heavenly home on Sunday July 2, 2017 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.  Born in Miami, Florida she lived in New York City before moving to Ocean Grove 40 years ago.  Linda was a graduate of St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Greenwich Village, Mt. Vernon High School, Mt. Vernon, NY and Stratford College in Hobart. VA.  Linda previously worked at Eclipse Mattress in New York City as an assistant to the manager, and for the IBM Corporation in Iselin as an account administrator. She was last employed by the Asbury Park Press in the advertising department, when she retired. Since 1971 Linda assisted with the management of the family rental properties in Ocean Grove, only recently taking sole responsibility of those duties.  Linda met weekly with the Bradley Beach Writer’s Group, an activity she enjoyed immensely with a group of people she cherished her time with.  Linda’s love of life overflowed in many ways.  She was a lover of horses, at one-time riding and jumping during her college years, and she continued to enjoy riding when she would visit Central Park in NYC.  She had a passion for traveling, and has visited countries throughout Europe.  Linda enjoyed Broadway shows, and was a collector of the recordings from those shows.  An avid reader, Linda had a large library containing books on many of her favorite subjects and personalities.  In her spare time, Linda dabbled in painting - and she even attempted personal portraits.  Most of all, Linda loved people, and it showed in her many close friends that could be found, both locally and around the country.  Her positive outlook on everything and everyone was unshakeable.  Linda had a gift of knowing the right words to say that could comfort anyone, or turn a bad situation around.  She brought love and laughter to everyone she met, whether family, friend or stranger.  Linda was predeceased by her grandparents, Byron S. and Hattie Madsen and William Alexander and Bertha Bartels Moffat. Surviving are her mother Gloria Moffat of Long Branch, her companion, Lee Lampron of Ocean Grove, her cousins, William and Sharon Wenzel of Browns Mills, Claire and Thomas Algerio of Pahrump, NV, many other cousins in Omaha, NB and Virginia Beach, VA, many friends all over the country and her dogs, Rocket, JJ and Ling Ling.  Relatives and friends may call on Sunday from 1:00 - 3:00 and 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove with interment following at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Deborah Hospital Foundation at www.deborahfoundation.org/donate for pulmonary medicine would be appreciated.
