Lucious Zachary

 Lucious F. Zachary, Jr., a lifelong resident of Asbury Park, died on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Atria Senior Living, Tinton Falls. Mr. Zachary was predeceased by his parents, Lucious and Murth Zachary and his sister Henrietta.  He is survived by a sister Ann May Williams of Carle Place, NY, his nieces and nephew, and many loving friends and godchildren. Mr. Zachary was a teacher at Asbury Park Middle School for 23 years before retiring. He was a graduate of Asbury Park High School, where he excelled in academics and track, and Monmouth College, where he graduated with honors. He sang professionally at Temple Beth El, Oakhurst and with the Metro Lyric Opera Company, Asbury Park, where he sang the principal bass roles. He taught himself to sew and make patterns and made costumes for himself and for other performers at the MLO.  He also worked at the Dainty Apparel in Asbury Park and at the Barbizon Modeling School in Red Bank.  He was a member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, Asbury Park and sang in the choirs at Trinity Episcopal Church, Asbury Park and at St. James Episcopal Church, Bradley Beach. He was a mentor to many throughout his life and loved to share his knowledge and talents in opera, fashion, etymology, and history, and could complete the New York Times crossword puzzle – in pen!  He was a Boy Scout Troop leader, a volunteer at Monmouth Day Care, a Fresh Air Fund host, and opened his heart and home to many. His wonderful sense of humor and remarkable intelligence were exceeded only by his unwavering commitment and dedication to everything he did and everyone he loved. At his request, there will be no funeral.  However, condolences or memories may be sent to Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave., Ocean Grove, NJ 07756

Tara Ann Higgins, 59, of Ocean Grove, died Friday August 16, 2019 at home. Tara attended Westfield High School and Kean University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Media Studies and her Master of Arts degree in Organizational Development/Communications. She also held various degrees and certifications in Social Media, Marketing and Analytics. She worked her entire life at Kean University at both the Union and Ocean County Campuses. For the last nine years she held the position of Managing Assistant Director of the Administrative Operations Department at Kean Ocean where she was also an adjunct Social Media Professor. She was born in New York City and grew up in Westfield. She moved full time from Rahway to Ocean Grove in 2010 and quickly developed a passion for her Ocean Grove Community and the art shown in the many organizations she was involved with. Tara was a member of the Ocean Grove Ladies Auxiliary, holding the positions of Book Sale Co-Chairperson, Social Media Coordinator, Vice President and President. She was active with the OG Citizens Patrol, The Delta Phi Epsilon- Area Chapter, serving as Advisor/Mentor, various LGBTQ organizations, The Wooden Walls Project and the Habitat for Humanity Restore. Surviving are her by brothers Jay and Drew, her nieces Kasey and Kiely, her nephews, Jake, Justin, and Zach, her stepmother Maryanne and step siblings: Dee, Donna, Kathy and George. A Celebration of Life will be Wednesday August 21, 2019 from 4 - 8 PM at Parlor Gallery, 717 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park, NJ www.parlor-gallery.com. LeRoy H. Edwards, Sr.

LeRoy H. Edwards, Sr., of Neptune, died Thursday August 15 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune surround by his loving family.  Mr. Edwards was an Auto Technology Teacher at Raritan High School before retiring in 2006.  He was an avid fisherman, a member of the Bass Anglers Association, and an amateur radio operator with the call sign AB2RE.  He was a member of the NHRA, enjoyed drag racing and spent many years volunteering with the Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management.  Mr. Edwards served with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.  Surviving are his devoted wife Felicia Shanley Edwards, his son, LeRoy H. Edwards, Jr. and his wife , Eleanor Glazewski,  his daughters, Christina Laing, Melissa Edwards and her husband Brad Palmerio and Caitlin Edwards, his brother, Terry Lee of SanDiego California, his sister Marilyn Lockhart and her husband Larry of Hillsborough, NJ, his six grandchildren, Jacob, Emily, Alexandra, Zoe, Czar and Joseph, many nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends. The family wishes to thank the nurses on Brennen 6 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center for their care and compassion.  A memorial mass will be offered at the Church of the Ascension of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach on Saturday August 31 at 10:30 AM with a repast to follow.  In lieu of flowers contributions to Hackensack Meridian Hospice at www.meridianathome.com would be appreciated. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph Kremer

 

Ocean Grove - Ralph (Roelof) Kremer, age 93, passed away at home on July 10th. He was born on June 24, 1926 in Gelderland, Netherlands and was the 4th of 9 children. Mr. Kremer served in the Dutch Army during the struggle between the Netherlands and Indonesia. He later moved to the United States in 1954 and eventually settled in Clifton, NJ before later moving to Ocean Grove in 1965. He was an expert woodworker and home builder and built several homes in Ocean Grove. He also enjoyed classical music, cooking, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Janekje and Herman, and his siblings Sietske, Jan, Jaap, Houkje, Bauke, and Herman. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Alice, as well as his son Harry and his wife Patty Kremer, his two grandchildren Amanda and Emma Kremer, and his two sisters Gientje Wesselink-Kremer and Janny de Wit-Kremer. The family would like to thank the VNA hospice, as well as his caregivers Annette and Joy. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date. He was a kind and gentle soul who was loved by all and will be truly missed

Heather D. Bray, loving mother, daughter and sister, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the age of 43. Heather was born on April 2, 1976 in Cleveland, OH to Dudley and Susan Bray. She graduated Neptune High School in 1994 and attended Brookdale Community College. She worked for many years as a preschool teacher at Tender Care Nursery, Ocean Grove, NJ. She was passionate about children, cooking and most importantly, her family and friends. Heather was predeceased by her mother, Susan Bray. She is survived by her father, Dudley Bray, her sister and brother-in-law, Alicia (Bray) and Alan Brown, her brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Katie Bray and the light of her life, daughter, Arely. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 26th from 2PM – 4PM and also from 6PM – 8PM at St. Paul’s UMC, 80 Embury Ave., Ocean Grove, NJ. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 27th at 11AM, also at St. Paul’s UMC. Burial will follow at the Old Tennent Cemetery in Tennent, NJ. Kennedy E. Buckley

Mr. Kennedy E. Buckley (PopPop) passed away at age 88 on June 15, 2019 in Neptune, New Jersey. Born on July 5, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, he lived in the Bronx, New York and Maywood, New Jersey before moving to Ocean Grove in 1995. Kennedy graduated from Iona College with a Degree in Business Administration. He served in the United States Army for two years as a radar technician during the Korean War. Kennedy was a Retailer for Bamberger’s and later Macy’s for 28 years, before retiring in 1995.  Kennedy was the loving husband of the late Joan Mary Buckley. He is survived by his son, Kennedy M. Buckley and his wife Amy; his daughter, Karen J Devcich and her husband Steve; and grandchildren, Steven Ryan Devcich, Christin Mary Devcich, and Alexa Katherine Buckley. Kennedy had several special volunteer commitments to his town including the Ocean Grove Citizens Patrol, the Ocean Grove Homeowners Association and the Historical Preservation Committee. Friends and family are welcome to attend the visitation on Sunday, June 23 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave, Ocean Grove.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension of the Parish of St. Teresa of Calcutta, 501 Brinley Avenue, Bradley Beach. The family invites donations in Kennedy’s name to the American Stroke Association at www.strokeassociation.org.

Dolores Daly Hagerman

 
Dolores Daly Hagerman passed away on April 30, 2019 at Coral Harbor Rehabilitation & Healthcare Ctr, Neptune City, NJ. She is predeceased by her husband of 64 yrs, Robert Hagerman, parents Joseph A. and Agnes, and brothers William and Alan Daly. Dolores is survived by her daughter, Sharon Purpuro, sons Eric and Robert T, granddaughter, Jennifer Wurst, grandsons, Robert C., Jason, Justin & Ryan Hagerman, Stephen Gubitosa, Christopher Zepada, her brother, Joseph Daly,17 greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dolores graduated from Neptune H.S. Before retiring in 1998, Dolores worked for New Jersey Natural Gas for 38 yrs. Dolores loved to tell you a joke and always had a beautiful smile for everyone she knew and didn’t know. Donald E. Hooper

 

In celebration of a life well lived, the family of Donald Edward Hooper July 27, 1926 - April 17, 2019  of Ocean Grove, are sad to announce his passing. Donald grew up in Hamden, Connecticut. From an early age he expressed an interest in electrical engineering, later choosing to pursue the field at the Yale University School of Engineering and Applied Science. Graduating in 1947, he began a two year rotational program with Public Service Electrical and Gas in New Jersey. After completing the program he decided to work within the distribution and transmission department improving and expanding the electrical power grid. In 1969, Donald became involved with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) updating and revising the code every three to five years. He retired from PSEG in 1988 and started a consultancy and continued to serve as chair of NESC  Interpretation Committee into his late 80’s.  Donald was a full time resident of Ocean Grove since 1979. Donald and his wife had been active supporters of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association for most of their lives. He faithfully served as an Auditorium Usher for more than 50 years. Don was pre deceased by wife Jacqueline. Surviving are his daughter, Susan Bishop and her husband Michael of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Canada, his granddaughter Kimberly Elmer and her husband Peter of Brick, N.J., and his grandson Keith Bishop and his wife Jennifer of Cochrane, Alberta, Canada. Don will also be sadly missed by great granddaughters, Katherine and Kayla Elmer and Adaline Bishop. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Donald’s life at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Ocean Grove on Saturday May 4th at 11:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, St. Paul’s Methodist Church or any charity of the donors choice.

Virginia H. Ferrante, 90, of Ocean Grove, died Thursday March 28, 2019.  She was an office clerk for Family and Children Services, retiring in 2002.  Born in Rahway, she has lived in Ocean Grove for over 30 years.  Virginia was pre deceased by her husband Ralph Ferrante in 1974 and by her daughter, Susan McCarthy in 1999.  Surviving are her children, Patricia G. Craig, John J. Schumitz, Cheryl Craig and Vittoria Ferrante, 14 grand children and 27 great grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held on Tuesday April 2 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Manor by the Sea or Meridian Hospice would be appreciated. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.

Tina Schollenberger, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 23, 2019.  She was born in Mt. Vernon, NY and moved to the Jersey Shore as a young girl, living in the area her entire life.  She had a smile that would light up the room and made friends wherever she went. She attended Lincroft Bible Church. Tina had many jobs, but being a taxi driver was her favorite.  Most of all, she loved being a mom and grandma. Surviving are her daughter Cathy Novicky and her husband, Dave, her sons, Joey Schollenberger, Larry Schollenberger and his wife, Robin, Pete Schollenberger and his wife Maxine, her grandchildren, Cathy, Mike, Sherry, Dave, Cindy, Brian, Tim, Olivia, Amy, Larry, Mandy and Joey and her great grandchildren, Keith, Holly, Michael, Angela, Amanda and Chelsea and her great great grandchildren, Kyah and Skye.  Relatives and friends may call on Thursday from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home 118 Main Avenue, Ocean Grove.  A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:30 AM at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch.
