Virginia H. Ferrante
Virginia H. Ferrante, 90, of Ocean Grove, died Thursday March 28, 2019. She was an office clerk for Family and Children Services, retiring in 2002. Born in Rahway, she has lived in Ocean Grove for over 30 years. Virginia was pre deceased by her husband Ralph Ferrante in 1974 and by her daughter, Susan McCarthy in 1999. Surviving are her children, Patricia G. Craig, John J. Schumitz, Cheryl Craig and Vittoria Ferrante, 14 grand children and 27 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday April 2 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 80 Embury Avenue, Ocean Grove. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Manor by the Sea or Meridian Hospice would be appreciated. The Ocean Grove Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements. |
Tina Schollenberger
Tina Schollenberger, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 23, 2019. She was born in Mt. Vernon, NY and moved to the Jersey Shore as a young girl, living in the area her entire life. She had a smile that would light up the room and made friends wherever she went. She attended Lincroft Bible Church. Tina had many jobs, but being a taxi driver was her favorite. Most of all, she loved being a mom and grandma. Surviving are her daughter Cathy Novicky and her husband, Dave, her sons, Joey Schollenberger, Larry Schollenberger and his wife, Robin, Pete Schollenberger and his wife Maxine, her grandchildren, Cathy, Mike, Sherry, Dave, Cindy, Brian, Tim, Olivia, Amy, Larry, Mandy and Joey and her great grandchildren, Keith, Holly, Michael, Angela, Amanda and Chelsea and her great great grandchildren, Kyah and Skye. Phyllis B. Kennette
Phyllis Adelle Brundige Kennette passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019. She was born June 30, 1934 in Potsdam, NY to Kenneth and Esther (Burnham) Brundige. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 59 years and her sister Barbara. Phyllis graduated from Plainfield High School in 1952 and married John W. Kennette (Jack) her high school sweetheart. Living in Philadelphia while Jack attended college they began their family with 3 sons, Thomas, David and John Christopher. The family moved to Hillsborough NJ in 1959 and made a beautiful home. In 1966 Phyllis and Jack gave birth to a daughter, Carol (the princess) to round out the family, Phyllis was passionate about life and all that it involved. She definitely looked on the bright side of life and loved everything about it. She enjoyed getting together with friends and family for good food, drink and a game. She loved her cars, especially convertibles and always had a flower garden to be proud of. Phyllis’s love of the beach and sun began early with her school gals and a summer tent in Ocean Grove with her parents. When Ken and Esther retired to Florida, Ocean Grove became home every summer. In 2000, retirement allowed Phyllis and Jack to become snowbirds and enjoy the beach year round with a place on the white sand gulf beach of Longboat Key, Florida. Phyllis is survived by her children, Thomas (and Gail) of Robbinsville, David of Ocean Grove, Christopher (and Kathy) of Phillipsburg, NJ; and Carol (and Griff) of Maineville, OH. Phyllis’s grandchildren Casey, Tara, Shan, Alison, Paige, Kiera, John Anthony, Ryan, Patrick, Samantha, Zoe, Piper and great grandchildren Kaya and Tyler and Logan will miss her for sure. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday March 30, 2019 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church 80 Embury Ave. Ocean Grove NJ 07756. James W. Swiger
James W. Swiger, Master Sergeant US Army, Retired of Neptune, died Sunday March 17. Mr. Swiger was born on October 28, 1942 in Cleveland, OH. He was the only son of the former SFC Harry Ray Swiger who died in Vietnam in 1965 and Almeda K. Watkins Swiger both from Lumberport, WV. As a child, he lived in Hawaii, Asmara Eritrea in Africa and many other military bases in the US. Mr. Swiger served over 20 years on active duty in the US Army and and received the meritorious service medal upon his retirement in 1983. After his retirement, he worked at Ft. Monmouth as a Logistics Management Specialist and Supervisor for another 20 years, retiring in 2004, receiving a meritorious service award for civilian service. He was predeceased by his parents, and his son, Retired Air Force Technical Sergeant, James W. Swiger, II. Surviving are his wife Irene E Meinhardt Swiger who he met while on active duty in Germany, his sons and daughters in law, George and Kathleen Swiger of West Allenhurst and Ralph and Joyce Swiger of of Middletown, his daughters and sons in law, Katharina and Randy Bakewitz of Rochester, NY, and Christine and John Gilliam of Mountain Home, AR, his daughter in law Heather Swiger of Jacob, IL, his step daughter and son in law, Marlies and Joachim Seif of Neustadt, Germany, his grandchildren, Melanie, Christopher, Brandon, Matthew, Hannes, Martin, Austin, Emily, Madison, Corey and Kyle and his great grandchildren, Travis, James, Emma and Zoey. Carol L. Mandeville, 70, of Toms River, died Tuesday March 5, 2019 at home. She was a 1966 graduate of Matawan Regional High School, where she was the captain of the majorettes and was voted Most Talented in the yearbook. Carol loved singing and performing and dazzled audiences all across the local area. She loved all animals, and her love for horses in particular led her to become an equine therapist. She also had worked for Siemens and Bell Labs. She was a member of Christ Church United Methodist in Fair Haven. Surviving are her son, Scott Caldwell of Perkasie, PA, her daughter Tracy Caldwell and her partner Charles Kouri, of Chicago, her brothers, Charles K. Mandeville and Stephen Mandeville and his spouse Victor Aluise of Ocean Grove. Joseph J. Inteso, 57, died February 7, 2019 from a sudden illness while vacationing on a cruise. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia (nee Chapman), his daughter Christina Marie, and his brother Anthony C. Inteso, Jr. and his wife Margery Inteso, of Bordentown, his sister Nancy Malool, her husband Paul and daughters Amanda and Emily, of Scotch Plains, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Joseph is predeceased by his parents, Anthony C. Inteso and Carol Ann Inteso and his grandparents Anthony P. Inteso and Theresa Lupo Inteso and John Wanat and Jessie Wanat. Joe was born on December 16, 1961 in Newark, NJ and lived in Edison, Toms River and Tinton Falls New Jersey before moving with his wife to Harvest, Alabama in 2007. As a young man, he was very involved in scouting and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout of which he was very proud. He earned a Bachelors degree in Electronic Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Masters degree in Software Engineering from Monmouth University. Joe’s career of thirty-one years with the U.S. Army was based primarily at Fort Monmouth in NJ but also supported assignments all over the globe including Afghanistan and Kuwait. He relocated to Redstone, Al in 2007 until his retirement in 2017. Joe loved to travel, especially to Aruba where he met up with his friends every November, and he always had another trip on the horizon. He enjoyed his ice-box seats (and all of his hockey friends) at the Huntsville Havoc hockey games. He was an avid fan of the NY Giants and of the Alabama Crimson Tide. He loved country music, reading, candy-crush, and Kakuro. Joe also supported The Ark, the local no-kill animal shelter from which two of his dogs were adopted. Arthur Vance Thomson, Sr.
Where do we start when it comes to the life of Arthur Vance Thomson, Sr.? Born August 20, 1943 in a garage apartment on Neptune Ave. in Neptune City, NJ, Artie as we liked to call him was a man of many talents. A graduate of Neptune High School in 1961, he was the drummer for his band The Chordials in the 60s and 70s. He was the “Prince of Paint” as the owner of Robin Hood Painting in the 80s and 90s. He was the official Poet Laureate at the former Sea Crest by the Sea bed and breakfast in Spring Lake, NJ where he also moonlighted as an innkeeper in the 2000s. It was in this position perhaps that he was most happy, interacting with guests and taking in the salt air he loved so much. If there was one thing Artie could do well it was talk. He had an ability to strike up a conversation and befriend just about anyone. From the cashier at his beloved Dunkin’ Donuts to just a stranger walking down the street. A true storyteller, Artie was for sure. But his greatest role in life was as a husband to his wife Terri Thomson, and as a father to his children Michael Thomson, Jacqueline Thomson, Jeffrey Joworski, Arthur Vance “Jay” Thomson, Jr. and his twin boys Shawn and Jason Thomson. He was so proud of all of his children. Artie loved Vic’s pizza and his Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, he loved his books and he loved to laugh. That laugh was infectious. His favorite song was Take 5 by Dave Brubeck. He also loved boxing. Truth be told Artie was a fighter and fought for his life until the very end. Just when we thought he was down and out he’d fight back even harder and prove us all wrong. Artie’s final match was a victory in love and life, surrounded by his family as he removed his gloves, took one last breath and passed peacefully at the age of 75 years old. He is survived by his loving wife Terri Thomson of Lakewood, his brother in law, Burton Dodge, his son Michael and daughter in law Denise of Andover, his daughter Jacqueline of Brielle, his son Jeffrey and daughter in law Patti of Sea Girt, his son Jay and daughter in law Marissa, his son Shawn and daughter in law Lindsey and his son Jason and daughter in law Sonia all of Shark River Hills, his grandchildren Travis, Jessica, Dylan, Brooke, Quinn, Teegan and Lola and his great-granddaughter Madison. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, January 24 between 5 and 8pm at the Ocean Grove Memorial Home, 118 Main Ave. in Ocean Grove. |
Frank “Steve” DeCapua
Frank “Steve” DeCapua , 95, a lifelong resident of Neptune, and a winter resident of Naples, FL, passed away peacefully at Manor by the Sea in Ocean Grove, NJ on Monday, January 14th. Frank was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Asbury Park. For many years he was an usher at 9:00 mass and also volunteered at Friday night bingo. Frank was a veteran of WWII and served in the 82 Airborne in Europe. Upon his retirement as a route salesman for Consolidated Laundry he worked part-time at Gourmet Kitchen in Neptune and wintered for 29 years in Naples FL. Frank was an avid Yankee fan who enjoyed a life of tennis, walking, storytelling and a glass or “two” of bourbon with his many friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years Celeste Maccanico and parents Frank and Lena DeCapua. He will be dearly missed by his daughter Lee Ann and son-in-law Sean F Duffy, several cousins and many friends in New Jersey and Florida. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, January 22nd at 11:00 at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Roman Catholic Church Donations in Frank’s memory may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 1212 1st Ave, Asbury Park, NJ. 07712. |
